Located at the very west end of the City of Marathon is the Seven Mile Bridge. It is arguable the most famous bridge of all of the bridges in the fabulous Florida Keys. It connects the City of Marathon in the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys and is among the longest bridges in existence at the time when it was built. Of the many bridges that connect the FL Keys, the Seven mile bridge is the longest.

The Old Seven Mile Bridge was originally constructed in the early 1900’s. In the early 1980’s a new bridge was constructed and the old bridge was no longer used for traffic.
Instead, it has become a tourist attraction and many locals and visitors alike use the 2 mile span for exercise or just to watch the sunset.

In the last 100+ years the bridge has fallen into disrepair. The railings are rusted, the concrete is cracked, and pieces are falling into the ocean. The Florida Department of Transportation is in the process of rehabilitating it but it’s going to take some time. They are performing abrasive blasting, steel repair, restoration of cracked concrete, and rehabilitation of bridge deck expansion joints. This is a $33 million + project that started in September 2017 and is scheduled to continue unit July 2021.
